The Minister of Cultural affairs of the  Municipality of Dénia, Josefa Font Reus, writes the following  in the Prologue (English version):

"Few things move us more than old pictures of well-known places. They provide an opportunity to see the changes that have taken place in the landscape and the way of life with the passing of time. The present volume is a collection of pictures from the albums of Ragnhild Conchita Andersen, know as “Raggen”, a Norwegian-Swede and a rotera. Looking at the images, it is moving to see how these snapshots in black and white capture the past of a geographical place like Les Rotes: so beautiful and so well-loved, and yet so threatened.

One of the tasks of the Department of Cultural Affairs in Dénia (Spain) is the recovery and conservation of old pictures from the town and its surroundings. Thanks to the generous gift of the present owner, Kirsten Lolita Milnes-Andersen, niece of the author of the albums, it has been possible to expand Dénia’s collection with new images which give a glimpse into life along the coast in the 1920s. The collection will be kept safely in the Municipal Archive of Dénia in order to guarantee correct storage and provide for future use, something which is being initiated with the publication of this book.

Today, Dénia is a tourist centre of national as well as international renown. However, there were not many foreigners coming to Dénia with the sole purpose of spending their summer holidays in 1925! The Andersens were truly pioneers, most likely the first Norwegians to discover these coast as a place of leisure. With time, the Andersens became more than visitors to Dénia during the summer. In particular, Raggen, who made the albums, became a part of her neighbourhood and as a true rotera she found her final resting place at the foot of Montgó. May this publication serve as a tribute to Raggen, paid by Kirsten Milnes-Andersen with the donation of this collection. A vote of thanks also to Alan Swan for his collaboration and contribution, and of course to Rosa Seser Pérez, archivist at the Municipal Archive, for taking on the task of editing this publication."

Douglas Soutar, General Secretary of the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP), writes  on the back cover of the book:

"For most Europeans today, leprosy is a disease associated either with biblical history or, if they are aware of its continued existence, with poverty and the so-called developing countries. Few will be aware of its more recent and indeed, its continued, presence in the developed world. "Journey from the Dark" providees a fascinating insight into the recent history of leprosy in Norway, the United States and Spain, and Kirsten Milnes' in-depth research has brought to life some of the intertwined social, personal and often political links which have moulded the history of this disease and the lives  of those affected by it in these three countries. While leprosy has declined and all but disappeared in many countries, this interesting and detailed book shows that we still have much to learn from the leprosy world when we face up to continuing challenges of how to tackle stigma and discrimination in our society today"

Kirsten Lolita Milnes was born in Spain. After an MA in philology, she trained as a Jungian  psychoanalyst in Zürich and as a group  psychotherapist in Oslo/London. Working in private practice over 25 years led to an interest in prejudice, stigmSanatorio San Francisco de Borja i Fontilles: a and exclusion. The chance discovery of Fontilles (Spain), the last leprosy colony  and  research hospital  in  Europe, initiated the journey described in this book. Kirsten Lolita lives in Switzerland and Spain with her husband. They have three children and  a grandchild.
